At least 39 people have been killed and about 69 were being treated for grave injuries after a gunman opened fire at at about 1:30 am local time in the Reina nightclub, where revelers indulged in New Year celebrations. Fifteen of the deceased are identified as foreigners, reported BBC.

BBC quoted Turkey’s interior minister Suleyman Soyly saying that efforts were continuing to find the attacker, who was believed to have acted alone.

Four of the 69 injured are said to be in a serious condition. “A manhunt for the terrorist is under way. Police have launched operations. We hope the attacker will be captured soon,” he told BBC.

Turkish officials imposed a media blackout on coverage of the attack, citing security issues. Some media reports spoke of more than one attacker and Dogan news agency reported that some witnesses claimed the attackers were “speaking Arabic”, but there is no confirmation of this.

In a statement, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Turkey would “fight to the end” against terrorism.

“They are trying to create chaos, demoralise our people and create chaos with abominable attacks which target civilians,” he said.

“We will retain our cool-headedness as a nation, standing more closely together, and we will never give ground to such dirty games.”

Meanwhile, India Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended condolences to Turkey.
